Response to Intervention (RTI) is a school-wide system for identifying and providing intervention to students falling behind their grade-level peers in the core academic subjects.  It has been researched mainly in reading, but could be applied to writing, math, and even behavior.  In the recent reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA-04), RTI is specifically mentioned as a method by which an LEA can identify students with Learning Disabilities, provided the instruction and interventions the student(s) received are scientifically research-based when practicable.  RTI has been implemented in many schools across the country in many different ways.

Education Service Center, Region 20, offers training and technical assistance in the area of Response to Intervention. This summer, Region 20 will offer the RtI Series during the week of August 4th. See schedule below:

  • August 4 – Progress Monitoring with Sarah Powell of Vanderbilt University
  • August 5 morning – Math RtI with ESC20 staff
  • August 5 afternoon – RtI Technology Review with ESC20 staff
  • August 6 – RtI in Secondary Schools with Joanne Allain
  • August 7 – Reading Intervention Fair (free) at Howard Elementary in Alamo Heights
  • August 8 – Behavior RtI with Randy Sprick

Interested participants can register online for these trainings. Additionally, campuses and districts interested in RtI can request general overviews, targeted trainings, or more intense trainings involving several sessions over time with technical assistance. Interested campuses and districts should contact Will Baker at (210) 370-5479.
