Although a campus has worked to improve school-wide climate and classroom management, a small number of
students may continue to exhibit severe, chronic, inappropriate behaviors. These students may benefit from specialized individual student interventions that target their specific behaviors and change the patterns of disruptive behavior. Visit
iLearning, our Learning Management System and online catalog, to view and register for staff development opportunities in the area of individual student interventions:
The Annual Behavior Institute
This annual event is the highlight of professional development opportunities offered here at Region 20. Each year a keynote speaker addresses the theme for the year with breakout sessions that deepen understanding of the theme. Keynote speakers of previous institutes have included Randy Sprick, Marcus Conyers, Terry Scott, Martin Brokenleg, Jane Bluestein, and Rich Allen. Other sessions are offered in various multi-disciplinary areas that complement student discipline and behavior, such as autism, gifted and talented, pre-school, career and technology education, and LRE (least restrictive environment).
The Behavior Unit Teacher Academy
This four-day academy is designed to meet the specialized needs of teachers and paraeducators who work with students with behavior disorders. Because effective instruction impacts behavior, each morning focuses on how to differentiate instruction in each core subject area to meet diverse learning levels. Each afternoon emphasizes behavior concepts and strategies such as classroom and crisis management, motivation systems, social skills instruction, and various ways to structure a behavior unit classroom. Participants will receive CHAMPs: A Positive and Proactive Approach to Classroom Management, the Tough Kid Toolbox, as well as resources on differentiating TEKS-based instruction and social skills instruction.
Managing Acting Out Behavior
The workshop focuses on preventing acting-out behavior in the classroom. Participants learn skills to develop a classroom management system that provides structure for students, especially those with emotional and behavioral problems. Participants will learn the behavior cycle and interventions to use at each level.
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI)
This interactive workshop will teach participants struggling with student behavior and discipline issues ways to de-escalate students before a crisis occurs. Participants will learn warning signs and verbal diffusion techniques for dealing with the most difficult student behaviors. Participants who demonstrate required competency in this two-day workshop will be certified by the National Crisis Prevention Institute. Given the interactive nature of this workshop, participants are encouraged to dress comfortably.
Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI)
Life Space Crisis Intervention is a model designed to empower teachers, counselors, and other school staff to effectively intervene in the repetitive patterns of self-defeating behavior common in troubled students. Participants will learn how to identify and change these behaviors using six unique student interviews.
