The purpose of the Behavior Coach Program is to provide extensive training and technical assistance to qualified applicants in best practice models for behavior, discipline, safety, and instructional practices that impact those areas. The program began as a result of school campuses and districts recognizing a need for highly qualified individuals to provide behavior support on their campuses. There is no fee associated with this program.
Applications for participation in the 2009 cohort are currently being accepted. Participants in the process will receive over 200 hours of training and technical assistance over a two-year period. The first year will primarily be classroom-based with the second year being dedicated to implementation and action research on their home campus or at a district level. The program participants meet once a month on a weekday during the school year and five days during the summer. Therefore, it is imperative that each applicant have the support of the campus administrator or direct supervisor. A recommendation by their direct supervisor is required.
Each behavior coach will be trained to conduct consultations with teachers and administrators, implement school-wide discipline, possess knowledge in a variety of classroom management program and instructional strategies, conduct functional assessments, collect and analyze data to make decisions, teach social skills, and conduct effective presentations.
In order to complete the two-year program and be certified by Region 20 as a Behavior Coach, candidates must demonstrate an understanding of positive behavior support philosophy, a strong knowledge base in behavior management, and professional personal skills.
