Here's a way to make a calendar that truly revolves around your child's sense of what's important.
On a large sheet of construction paper, draw a calendar grid for a particular month, or the whole year. Select dates that your child is sure to be interested in, such as his or her birthday, the birthdays of other family members, major holidays or travel plans, and so on. Now cut out a flap for each date.
Place a piece of poster board behind the calendar. Attach the two pieces with double stick tape or glue at the outer edges. Open each flap and draw or affix an appropriate picture or photograph to the second sheet. Then draw a picture for the outer flap, as well.
You can use the calendar to show your child how many days he or she has to wait before a special event.
