Have your children stand in an open area, pretending to be trees growing in the forest. Encourage them to stretch their arms up over their heads like branches. Pretend to be the wind. As you move through the forest lightly touch each "tree" and have it begin to bend and sway its branches. Continue until all the trees in the forest are swaying back and forth. Teach the following rhyme:
Deep in the forest With trees so tall, (stretch arms high) I feel so little, So very small. (make self small) I love to look up And see the trees bend. (look upward) I know they're saying, "Let's all be friends".
2. This activity deals with "Responsibility."
Discuss with children how the cowboys have responsibilities. They are responsible for taking care of the cows and their horse. Have children share what they are responsible for at home and at school. Teach the following song:
I've Been Riding on the Range (sung to: "I've Been Working on the Railroad") I've been riding on the range, All the livelong day. I've been riding on the range, Herding doggies on their way. Can't you hear the cowboys shouting? "Yippity-oh-ky-yay!" Can't you hear the cowboys shouting? "Doggies, move this way!"
Repeat substituting "cowgirls" for "cowboys." Explain to the children that "doggies" are stray or motherless calves.
