1. Bus Evacuation Drills

Practice emergency evacuation from a school bus three times a year.

  • The first evacuation drill can be from the front of the school bus.
  • The second evacuation drill can be from the rear of the school bus.
  • The third evacuation drill can be split with some children exiting the front while others exit the rear of the school bus.

2. Transportation Mural (3 year olds)

Tear out magazine pages with transportation pictures on them. Put several magazine pages in a shallow box on the table. Let children look at the pages and tear out the pictures they like. Let the children glue their pictures to a poster board. Hang on the door in the classroom for all to see.

3. Bus Safety (4 year olds)

Invite a school bus driver to come talk with the children about bus safety (talking quietly, having back against seat, setting up in the seat, keeping arms, legs, hands, and heads never outside the windows, etc.). "Practice riding on the bus by having the children sit in two rows, one child behind the next, designating the child to be the "driver." Ask them to practice the safety rules as you "make a pretend trip to school."
